
Steven A. Toms, MD, joins Geisinger to lead Neurosurgery program
DANVILLE -- Steven A. Toms, MD, Has been named Geisinger Health System’s Director of Neurosurgery and Co-Director of the Neuroscience Institute.
“Dr. Toms is a highly qualified neurosurgeon with special expertise in treating brain tumors,” said Chief Medical Officer Bruce Hamory, MD. “With his experience as a physician and leader, Dr. Toms will play a central role in developing Geisinger’s neurosurgery program to benefit patients and their families across the region.”
Prior to arriving at Geisinger, Dr. Toms served as director of the Section of Metastic Disease and staff neurosurgeon at the Brain Tumor Institute at The Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Toms has also served as an assistant professor of neurological surgery at both Vanderbilt and Oregon Health & Sciences Universities.
After graduating from Brown University Medical School, Dr. Toms served his neurological surgical residency at The Cleveland Clinic. He then served a residency in preventive medicine at Johns Hopkins University followed by a second neurological surgical residency at The Cleveland Clinic and a neurosurgical oncology fellowship at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
Dr. Toms is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery and is a Fellow of The American College of Surgeons. His research interests include molecular biology of tumors, uses of nanotechnology and neuro-oncology (brain cancer), and his findings have been published in several peer-reviewed publications.
Dr. Toms is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, The Congress of Neurological Surgeons and the Society for Neuro-Oncology. He has also received numerous honors and awards throughout his career including being named to the Best Doctors in America list twice, the ROSE award (Recognizing Outstanding Service Excellence), the Brown University Program in Medicine Award for Outstanding Performance in Medical Studies and many more.
