Shivprasad Nikam, MD, joins vascular surgery team at the Pearsall Heart Hospital at Geisinger Wyoming Valley

WILKES-BARRE — Shivprasad Nikam, MD, comes to the Pearsall Heart Hospital at Geisinger Wyoming Valley in Wilkes-Barre as a vascular surgeon, where he joins David Mariner, MD, FACS, RVT. Dr. Nikam recently completed a fellowship in vascular surgery at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. There he was involved in several innovative research projects at the Weis Center for Research.

Board certified in surgery, Dr. Nikam earned his medical degree from B.J. Medical College in Pune, India, and obtained a Master of Surgery distinction from the college and Sassoon General Hospital of the Pune University. He completed his residency in surgery at Bronx Lebanon Hospital Center in New York as well as Sassoon General Hospital in India.

Dr. Nikam has had a distinguished career abroad, working in both general surgery and vascular surgery capacities in India and the United Kingdom. He is a Fellow of the prestigious Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, UK.

Dr. Nikam’s areas of interest include traditional open vascular surgery for the diseases of the aorta, carotid arteries, peripheral leg arteries etc. He has special interest in the minimally invasive endovascular treatment modalities like carotid stents, stent graft treatment for aneurysms of aorta, angioplasties and stent treatment of peripheral arterial disease (PAD).

Marrying his skills in medicine with his interests in information technology, Dr. Nikam also developed a software program allowing the surgical department at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York, to transition from paper to electronic medical records. His experience in this regard will serve him well in his new position, as Geisinger is at the forefront of the country’s rapidly emerging electronic health records movement.
