Region's only sports medicine fellowship trained physicians complete first year at GWV
|
WILKES-BARRE — Clayton Everline, MD, recently completed the first-ever sports medicine fellowship at Geisinger Wyoming Valley. The year-long appointment, under the direction of sports medicine physician David Ross, MD, is the only one of its kind in northeastern Pennsylvania. Dr. Everline joined the Geisinger fellowship program in July 2007. Physicians accepted into fellowship programs receive advanced training in a medical specialty. Fellows, like Dr. Everline, have many hands-on learning opportunities, including assisting on orthopaedic surgeries, running their own sports medicine clinic and serving as the team physician for multiple local high school and college sport teams, as well as the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers arena football team and the WB/S Penguins hockey team. Fellows also present at a fracture care conference and host a sports medicine didactic series for other physicians in the field. According to Dr. Everline, the Geisinger sports medicine program holds advantages over other hospitals and healthcare systems across the country. “I was attracted to the fellowship program at Geisinger Wyoming Valley by the quality of the faculty, quality of the facilities, opportunity for research, and the potential career opportunities that follow a fellowship program of this caliber,” he said. |

| “The inaugural year of the fellowship was definitely a success,” said Dr. Ross. “And I’m confident the sports medicine program will further develop each year with additional opportunities for our fellows.”
Two new sports medicine fellows, Paresh Ghodge, MD, and Joe Pugleasa, MD, joined the program at Geisinger Wyoming Valley in July 2008. Dr. Ghodge recently completed his residency at University of Missouri–Columbia. Previously, Dr. Pugleasa worked in private practice as an internal medicine physician in Massachusetts for 16 years and served as a team physician for the USA Ski team. Geisinger Northeast is dedicated to advancing its academic programs locally. In addition to the sports medicine fellowship, Geisinger hosts a unique family medicine residency program in which residents practice family medicine, but also complete rotations in medical specialties such as emergency medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, and general surgery. #### |
