New endoscopy suite opens at Geisinger Wyoming Valley

Oct.. 28, 2009, WILKES-BARRE — Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center recently opened a new endoscopy suite. Six newly renovated procedure rooms double the capacity of the previous endoscopy area on the sixth floor.

The suite, located on the third floor of the main hospital, also enhances patient comfort because it provides more space, more privacy and a large waiting area.

The new suite comes just as Geisinger Wyoming Valley welcomed three new gastroenterologists.  Athar Altaf, M.D.; Duane Deivert, D.O.; and Yakub Khan, M.D., recently joined Paul Neizgoda, M.D., and David Schaefer, M.D., Ph.D., director of gastroenterology, Geisinger Northeast.

“The space better accommodates our team and the needs of our patients,” says Dr. Schaefer. “Between the new space and our new gastroenterologists, we are now able to see more patients, more quickly.

Procedures performed in the new endoscopy suite range from high-definition video colonoscopy and endoscopic ultrasound to capsule endoscopy and therapeutic interventions such as biopsy of the bile and pancreatic ducts.
