March 28, WILKES-BARRE - John W. McBurney, MD, has been appointed the Director of Neurology at Geisinger Wyoming Valley.

A graduate of Auburn University with a bachelor of science, Dr. McBurney received his medical degree from Emory University School of Medicine. He completed a neurology residency and was fellowship trained in electroencephalography and epilepsy at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC.

Dr. McBurney is board-certified in neurology, clinical neurophysiology and sleep medicine.  Previous to his appointment at Geisinger Wyoming Valley, Dr. McBurney served as Assistant Chief of Neurology and Deputy Director of Neurology Residency at Madigan Army Medical Center, Chief of Clinical Neurophysiology at Madigan Army Medical Center, Assistant Professor of Neurology at the University of Alabama Medical Center and Medical Director of the Center for Disorders of Sleep Fatigue in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

He is affiliated with several professional medical organizations, including the American Epilepsy Society and the American Academy of Neurology and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Dr. McBurney was voted the outstanding fellow during his Fellowship at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, received the Legion of Merit upon retirement from the Army, and was named to the list of Best Doctors in America for 2005-2006.
