john han, md, director pain managementMarch 21, DANVILLE - Anesthesiologist John J. Han, MD, was recently named Director of Pain Management at Geisinger Medical Center. Dr. Han joined Geisinger's Pain Management team as an associate in 1999 and most recently served as the Associate Director.

Dr. Han is a graduate of Georgetown University School of Medicine and completed his internship at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

He served his anesthesiology residency at the Mayo Clinic and completed his Pain Management fellowship at Henry Ford Medical Center. Dr. Han is board certified in both anesthesiology and in pain management.

Dr. Han has assumed the department directorship from Kalyan Krishnan, MD, who began his pain management practice at Geisinger in 1977. Dr. Krishnan has led the development of pain management from a part-time service to a comprehensive interventional pain clinic with four board-certified/board-eligible pain physicians, three physician assistants and an experienced nursing staff.

During the past year, Drs. Krishnan and Han, along with Marlair Graham, RN, clinic nurse coordinator, have introduced a number of initiatives that have reduced the waiting time for first appointments (for newly referred patients) from over two months to approximately two weeks while maintaining patient satisfaction scores over the 90th percentile.

Dr. Krishnan will continue to provide patient care in the clinic as senior consultant in pain medicine. This change in leadership will facilitate continuity in the development and implementation of policies, strategy and design of the new Department of Pain Medicine at Woodbine Lane, expected to open in the early part of 2007. Further expansion of Pain Medicine throughout the Geisinger Health System is also planned.
