Geisinger welcomes new chairman of OB/GYN

July 1, 2009, DANVILLE – Geisinger announced today that John D. Nash, M.D., has joined the health system as chairman, department of obstetrics/gynecology, and medical director, Women’s Health.

In his new role, Dr. Nash will oversee the department of OB/GYN, which offers a range of services, including maternal fetal medicine, reproductive endocrinology and urogynecology. OB/GYN services are available at Geisinger Medical Center (GMC) in Danville, Geisinger Wyoming Valley in Wilkes–Barre, and specialty sites in Lewistown, Lock Haven, Gray’s Woods (Patton Township), Pottsville and Tunkhannock.

In addition to his administrative duties, Dr. Nash will see gynecologic oncology patients at GMC.

“The department of OB/GYN is one of Geisinger’s strongest, and I look forward to helping continue its outstanding service to patients,” Dr. Nash said. “This is a tremendous opportunity.”

Dr. Nash is board-certified in obstetrics/gynecology and gynecologic oncology, and is a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. He is an expert in the treatment of cervical and ovarian cancers.

Most recently, he served as medical director and director of clinical affairs at the University of Connecticut Health Center’s Carol and Ray Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center. In addition, Dr. Nash served as associate professor in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Connecticut.

Dr. Nash’s arrival in July will enable Eric J. Bieber, MD, who has served as chairman of the department and Women’s Health medical director since 2001, to serve full-time as Geisinger Health System’s executive vice president for strategic network development.

“Dr. Bieber has done an outstanding job of leading the department,” said Howard R. Grant, M.D., J.D., Geisinger’s chief medical officer. “Dr. Bieber has overseen a period of tremendous growth and recently guided the launch of our landmark ProvenCare perinatal program.”
