Geisinger scientist receives grant from PA Breast Cancer Coalition
DANVILLE - Cell signaling that could lead to a more targeted approach of breast cancer staging and treatment was among the proposals recognized by the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition today when it named Sigfried and Janet Weis Center for Research scientist Marius Sudol, PhD as one of its grant award recipients.
The Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition’s advisory board approved a proposal from Dr. Sudol and awarded him $50,000 over the next year for research support. Last year, Dr. Sudol received a $35,000 grant from the same organization. Click to listen to a podcast of Dr. Sudol discussing his work with members of the coalition.
“This award is not only a great honor,” said Dr. Sudol, “it also provides me the opportunity to focus my research on breast cancer, allowing me to contribute to the understanding of the progression and staging of the disease.”
Dr. Sudol noted that he’s been focused on cancer research for 25 years. “The support of the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition over the past two years has allowed me to fully concentrate on this very important area of investigation.”
The Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition awards – which went to eight Pennsylvania researchers - are designed to encourage the next generation of breast cancer research by funding PhD scientists engaged in innovative research. Funding for the award is generated through the state’s Income Tax Check-Off for Breast and Cervical Cancer Research.
The Income Tax Check-Off for Breast and Cervical Cancer Research has become the most popular refund donation option in Pennsylvania since its inception in 1997, when the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition worked with the state legislature to enact the program. Every penny of the over $2 million that has been raised through the initiative goes directly to fund breast and cervical cancer research conducted by Pennsylvania researchers. Pennsylvanians are reminded to check line 35 on the PA 40 tax form to donate their state tax refund to help make a difference.
