Geisinger pediatrician co-writes major clinical reports on autism

DANVILLE- A series of new guidelines that could change how doctors across the country diagnose and treat Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) was co-written by Geisinger neurodevelopmental pediatrician Scott Myers, MD.

Myers was in San Francisco this week at the American Academy of Pediatrics National Conference and Exhibition to discuss these two reports. Another Geisinger neurodevelopmental pediatrician, Thomas Challman, MD, contributed to the reports, which were released by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

The first report, “Identification and Evaluation of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders,” provides detailed information on signs and symptoms so pediatricians can recognize and assess ASDs in their patients.

Educational strategies and associated therapies, which are the cornerstones of treatment for ASDs, are reviewed in the second clinical report, “Management of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders.”

The reports call for earlier diagnosis and screening for autism and contain intervention strategies for autism.
