Geisinger opens state-of-art Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Center
Aug. 14, DANVILLE — A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on Thursday, July 20, to mark the grand opening of Geisinger’s new Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Center, located on the corner of Woodbine Lane and Route 11 in Danville.
The new Sports Medicine Center will allow Geisinger to provide high-quality, convenient sports medicine and orthopaedic care to area athletes. “Our mission is to be the sports medicine provider of choice for area high school, collegiate and other athletic teams,” said Daniel Feldmann, MD, Geisinger Health System’s Chief of Sports Medicine Services. “Athletes represent a unique population that requires special medical attention.”
Guest speaker Pat Flannery, head coach of the Bucknell University men’s basketball team, spoke about athletes of yesterday and today and the potential benefits of the new Sports Medicine Center to area athletic programs. The Bucknell Bison earned the nickname “Darling of the Dance” after stunning Kansas in the first round of the NCAA tournament in 2005.
The Sports Medicine Center opened to patients Monday, July 10, and is expected to deliver orthopedic services to an estimated 75 to 100 patients per day and rehabilitation services to about 70 patients per day. The new facility will house 19 Geisinger employees and 26 Geisinger HealthSouth rehabilitation specialists. More than 15 regional contractors helped construct the new building, which was designed by architects at EwingCole.
The 33,000-square-foot, $6.8 million building will be located in the same complex as Geisinger’s Outpatient Surgery Center. The comprehensive facility will be a one-stop complex for orthopedic visits, radiology services and rehabilitation for sports injuries. It contains:
The facility will house many rehabilitation services currently located at Geisinger HealthSouth. These include physical therapy, lymphedema therapy, industrial rehabilitation, functional capacity evaluation, ophthalmology, oral surgery, orthopedics, plastic surgery and urology.
