Geisinger offers comprehensive LASIK screening services
DANVILLE- In light of the recent FDA hearing evaluating the safety profile of LASIK, a Geisinger fellowship-trained eye surgeon says that thorough pre-operative screenings are critical to avoiding long-term complications.
“All of the additional recommendations put forth by the FDA after the recent hearing were already being practiced at our refractive surgery program,” said Geisinger surgeon Kendall R.B. Dobbins, MD. “Even before the FDA addressed these issues, we had implemented a high level of quality and safety standards in our program.”
Geisinger’s board-certified, fellowship-trained cornea and LASIK surgery specialists Dr. Dobbins and Nathalie M. Guibord, MD, provide LASIK services at Geisinger Medical Center and Geisinger Medical Group offices in Berwick and Hazleton.
LASIK surgery involves using a laser to reshape the cornea of the eye, which changes focusing power and corrects nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.
Prospective Geisinger LASIK patients typically receive a two to three hour consult to determine if they are good candidates for the surgery and to allow enough time for the patients to have all of their questions addressed by the surgeon pre-operatively.
“Dr. Guibord and I personally meet with every patient at every encounter—pre-operatively, post-operatively, and of course, on the day of surgery,” Dr. Dobbins said. “Few programs provide that direct comprehensive service from the surgeon and we’re one of the very few practices in the area to perform laser-only blade-free LASIK.”
