Geisinger named among country's 'Most Wired' healthcare providers
July 20, 2009, DANVILLE - Geisinger Health System has been listed among the country’s “100 Most Wired Hospitals and Health Systems.” The list was compiled by Hospitals & Health Networks (H&HN) magazine, the journal of the American Hospital Association.
H&HN editors selected winners from 1,314 hospitals representing approximately 20 percent of all U.S. hospitals. This is the seventh year that Geisinger has achieved this distinction since H&HN began the recognition 11 years ago.
“We are honored to receive this recognition,” said Geisinger President and CEO Glenn Steele Jr., M.D., Ph.D. “We believe that by investing in digital technology, healthcare providers can improve healthcare efficiency and value, and provide better care for patients.”
This annual recognition is the result of hundreds of surveys and a national benchmarking study. Hospitals and health systems are named “Most Wired” based on a detailed scoring process. Participating hospitals reported on how they currently use information technology to address five key areas: safety and quality, customer service, business processes, workforce and public health.
With an investment of more than $100 million in an electronic health record (EHR), Geisinger is one of the most digitally advanced healthcare providers in the nation, said Frank Richards, Geisinger’s Chief Information Officer.
“Our EHR provides the foundation for such nationally recognized programs as ProvenCare and ProvenHealth Navigator,” Richards said. “In the coming years, we will continue using information technology to find new and better ways to connect hospitals and doctors with patients and their families.”
In addition to the H&HN honor, Geisinger also regularly receives recognition by national quality programs such as the InformationWeek 500 list of the nation’s most innovative users of information technology and the Verispan Integrated Health Networks Top 100 list of top integrated health networks.
