Geisinger dietitian: Carbohydrates and proper nutrition are keys to fueling athletes during competition
WILKES-BARRE – Contrary to popular belief, carbohydrates are the most important nutrient for energizing athletes during competitions, according to Geisinger dietitian Stephanie Yeager, RD.
A carbohydrate is essentially a sugar that’s the most common source of energy for humans. Good sources of carbohydrates include whole grains, legumes, fruits and dairy products.
If an athlete doesn’t consume enough carbohydrates, they are more likely to hit a wall during competition and not perform as well, Yeager said.
Yeager discussed carbohydrates and the importance of proper nutrition on this week’s Toyota High School Sports Show on FOX 56 WOLF-TV.
Yeager also recommends avoiding high-sugar, high-fat foods before events. Junk food such as candy bars don’t digest well and can cause cramping. Caffeine is also discouraged because it’s a diuretic that causes dehydration. Caution should also be used when consuming energy drinks because the stimulant and diuretic effect can be dangerous.
“If an athlete has high performance goals, then they need to have to good nutrition,” Yeager said “Nutrition is like the fuel you put in your car. If you put in a low octane fuel, your car isn’t going to run as well.”
