Geisinger - Mt. Pocono offers the latest technology in the fight against breast cancer
Digital mammography now available locally
Oct. 17, 2009, MT. POCONO — Just in time for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, digital mammography is now available at Geisinger – Mt. Pocono, giving women in Monroe County and surrounding communities access to the latest technology in the fight against breast disease. And convenient evening and weekend hours make scheduling an appointment easy.
Digital mammography uses computer-aided diagnostics (CAD) to deliver improved image clarity over traditional mammography equipment. Physicians can easily enhance and magnify the images, resulting in the most accurate reading and results. The digital equipment is also more comfortable for patients.
“Early detection is critical in the treatment of breast cancer and digital mammography is the gold standard,” says radiology technician Janet Jaken, RT(M). “Having this technology readily available, close to home, is ideal for women.”
If a woman has suspicious results, advanced breast diagnostics and treatment are available at Geisinger’s nationally recognized Breast Care Center in Wilkes-Barre. There an all-female staff, including interventional breast radiologists and breast surgeons, provide focused care for breast abnormalities such as cysts, lumps or pain within the breasts. In fact, breast surgeon Laura Borgos, MD, also offers pre- and post-operative appointments at Geisinger – Mt. Pocono.
If diagnosed with breast cancer, women will receive personalized care from the region’s only Breast Care Nurse Navigator and have access to more than 100 clinical trials.
And as part of one of the country’s most innovative electronic health records systems, patients can rest assured their medical information and test results transition seamlessly among appointments with specialists.
Mammography appointments at Geisinger – Mt. Pocono are available Monday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Tuesday through Saturday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Most insurance plans require an order from the patient’s primary care doctor or gynecologist.
