Geisinger Careworks retail clinic featured in New York Times

May 18, 2009, DANVILLE, PA - Geisinger’s Careworks Convenient Healthcare™ retail clinics were featured in a recent New York Times article entitled, Hospitals Begin to Move Into Supermarkets.

New York Times reporter Milt Freudenheim, accompanied by a staff photographer, interviewed staff and patients at the Careworks Convenient Healthcare site in Allentown, which Geisinger operates in partnership with Lehigh Valley Health Network.

According to Dean Lin, chief executive officer of Careworks Convenient Healthcare retail clinics,  “Retail clinics like Careworks are unique in that they support an integrated system of local care, collaborating---not competing---with area health providers. We provide non-emergent care to patients who might delay or avoid seeking treatment. We can also improve the reliability of providing preventative health. We have tremendous opportunities to support traditional healthcare resources by linking these individuals to primary care providers whenever possible.”

Dr. Will Miller, the chairman of family medicine doctors with practicing privileges at Lehigh Valley Health’s hospital in Allentown says he is a big supporter of the retail clinics. They fill a need for longer hours and walk-in care in a convenient location, he said.

In addition to the Allentown site, Geisinger operates Careworks Clinics in Weis-owned Supermarkets in Clarks Summit, Schnecksville, Stroudsburg and Tannersville.
