GMC Auxiliary events raise $63,000 for programs to support local residents

Nov. 3, 2009, DANVILLE – The Auxiliary at Geisinger Medical Center recently held two events that raised more than $63,000 for programs to benefit Geisinger patients.

Nearly 230 people attended “Lighting up Tomorrow,” the 2009 Auxiliary Gala black-tie event that featured live and silent auctions. The gala, which also included dinner and dancing, raised about $50,000.

Money raised benefits Camp Energy, a camp focused on adolescent obesity, and the “Lifesaver” Heart Health program that offers screening and education services to firefighters, police and EMS personnel – a group of professionals at increased risk for heart attack and stroke. Since May 2009, more that 150 of these community heroes have been screened and the program aspires to reach 1,000 more by next year.

Held in conjunction with the gala, the second annual “Take Aim for Charity” trap shoot raised an additional $13,000.

“People really enjoy the trap shoot. It’s a fun way to raise money for great causes,” said trap shoot co-organizer Noelle Tiesi. “We had a great response again this year and look forward to more success in the future.”

Auxiliary president Melanie Strodel said these fundraisers reflect the Auxiliary’s commitment to the community. “We have a very active Auxiliary that cares about our hospital and region,” Strodel said. “Thanks to the efforts of our volunteers and donations from local businesses and Auxiliary supporters, both events exceeded our fundraising expectations.”

The Auxiliary’s members organize fundraisers to support programs for adult and pediatric programs at Geisinger Medical Center. The Auxiliary also operates Abigail’s Attic Thrift Shop and Miracle Square Gift Shop in the Janet Weis Children’s Hospital.
